I’ll Take You There – The Staple Singers (1972)
I’ll Take You There” is a number-one single written by Alvertis Isbell, produced by Al Bell and performed by soul/gospel family band The Staple Singers, released on Stax Records in February of 1972. The song spent a total of fifteen weeks on the Billboard charts and reached number one on the Hot 100. Bolstered by a “feel-good” vibe, “I’ll Take You There” peaked at number-one on the Billboard R&B Singles chart for four weeks in May of 1972. In June, “I’ll Take You There” reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for one week. The song, ranked #276 on the Rolling Stone magazine list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, remains the most successful and recognizable single of the Staples’ half-century-long career. The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group. Roebuck “Pops” Staples (1914-2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha (b. 1934), Pervis (b. 1935), Yvonne (b. 1936), and Mavis (b. 1939). Oct. 11 – British novelist Doris Lessing reacted with the words ‘Oh Christ!’ when told by a Reuters correspondent that she’d won the 2007 Nobel Prize for literature. Lessing gave her reaction as she returned to her home in London soon after the award was announced. According to her agent she missed the actual announcement as she had been out shopping.
